Background & Expertise

Dr. Perry is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with special interests in minimally invasive joint replacement and sports medicine.

Dr. Perry is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American
Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Hip and Knee Surgeons,
the Michigan Orthopedic Society and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Perry is a Detroit-area native, is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Medicine and
completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, which is a top 5 research center. During residency training, all orthopedic doctors undergo yearly testing. His senior year of training, he had the top score in the entire country.

Dr. Perry has extensive experience in “minimally invasive joint surgery.” During his first decade in
practice, he ran a Sports Medicine clinic at the DMC, and was a clinical instructor at Wayne State
University. He developed an arthroscopic surgery program at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He has
performed almost a thousand Arthroscopic Knee Reconstructions (ACL/ligament surgery).

In his twenty-year career (1995-2015), Dr. Perry has performed thousands of hip and knee replacements.

In 1999 he began performing Arthroscopically assisted Partial Knee Replacements (also known as
Unicompartmental Arthroplasty or Makoplasty), and since has performed over 800 cases. When
combined with Dr. Lee, St Clair Orthopaedics has more experience with this procedure than anyone else
in the Detroit area.

Dr. Perry currently performs approximately 250 Total Knee Replacements annually. His new minimally
invasive technique involves: a mini incision, no muscle is cut, and no tourniquet is used (which bruises
the thigh). A pain catheter is installed before surgery, and is also used while at home, which dramatically
reduces suffering. His technique also uses digital sizing and computer assisted planning/surgery. He also
uses the latest technology in knee components, including ligament sparing implants for active patients.
Some patients are sent home the same day, or one day after surgery, although two days is most common.

Approximately 10 years ago, Dr. Perry began training to perform a new technique called Anterior Hip Replacement. In 2009 he performed his first “minimally invasive anterior approach hip replacement.” The advantages of the anterior approach include less muscle trauma and greater accuracy. This surgery requires a new carbon-fiber operating table that is specially designed for this new approach. With this table, the hip joint is opened in the front, and no muscle is cut. This approach means the rehabilitation is accelerated, and no restrictions are needed. Because the table is carbon-fiber, X-ray guidance can be used throughout the entire surgery, which means the size and position of the new hip is much more accurate. This reduces complications associated with traditional hip replacement surgery (such as dislocations and incorrect leg length). In calendar year 2014, Dr. Perry performed over 300 Anterior Hip Replacements.

Dr. Perry serves as Team Physician for Grosse Pointe South High School athletics.

He has been voted by his peers as a top orthopaedic surgeon by “Hour Magazine – Top Docs” issue for
many years.

Dr. Perry is on staff at St. John Hospital, Beaumont Grosse Pointe Hospital and Henry Ford Macomb
Hospital.
