Background & Expertise

Dr. Bergin is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with fellowship training in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and
Shoulder Surgery. Originally from Rochester Hills, MI, Dr. Bergin completed his undergraduate studies
at the University of Michigan with a degree in mechanical engineering. While at Michigan, Dr. Bergin
also played quarterback for the University of Michigan Football Team and was a member of two Big Ten
Championship teams, including the 1997 National Championship Team under head coach Lloyd
Carr. He earned the University of Michigan Football Athletic Academic Achievement Award.

Dr. Bergin earned his medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI and completed his
residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He then went on to
complete advanced fellowship training in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which is a world leader in both research, and surgery on the
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). During his time in Pittsburgh, Dr. Bergin studied under Dr. Freddie
Fu and gained tremendous experience in treating ACL and other ligament injuries about the knee.

While in Pittsburgh, Dr. Bergin participated in the care and treatment of athletes and patients from the
high school to professional level, including the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Team, the Pittsburgh
Penguins Hockey Team, the University of Pittsburgh Football and Baseball Teams, and numerous other
NCAA sports at the University of Pittsburgh. He received specialty training in complex injuries
involving the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee, as well as specialty training in concussion management.

Dr Bergin specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, hip and knee, and has devoted much of his
practice to ACL surgery. He performs many ACL reconstructions, primary and revision in both adult and
pediatric patients. He is able to use a variety grafts and techniques depending on what is indicated or best
for the patient. In addition to ACL surgery Dr. Bergin also commonly performs meniscus surgery, patella
stabilization procedures, rotator cuff repairs, labral repairs of the shoulder and hip, shoulder arthroplasty
and fracture fixation. Dr. Bergin covers sporting events for many areas high schools in Macomb, St Clair
and Wayne counties, and is a team physician for Grosse Pointe North and South High Schools.

Dr. Bergin is a board-certified member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), with
additional sub-specialty certification in Sports Medicine. He is also a member of the American
Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the Arthroscopy Association of North America
(AANA), and the Michigan Orthopaedic Society (MOS).

In his free time Dr. Bergin enjoys spending time with his wife and four daughters. His hobbies include
golfing, skiing and biking.

Dr. Bergin has been consistently named by his peers as one of the area’s top Orthopaedic Sports Medicine
surgeons by “Hour Detroit” magazine in its annual “Top Docs” survey.
